Celebs Rediscover Dr Stillman Should You
In the 1960s and 1970s, Irwin Stillman was everything a diet doctors should not be: critical of the overweight, accusatory, and a proponent of the starved model look that has caused the modeling industry to catch a lot of fire for the use of anorexic looking girls in their ad campaigns. It has now become evident that celebs rediscover Dr. Stillman-should you?
It has been hailed as the original low carbohydrate diet and as such it found a lot of early adherents to its rather odd and sometimes even dangerous sounding precepts. Truth be told, the Stillman diet provided the springboard for Dr. Atkins and his low carb diet revolution and of course the subsequent outcropping in the form of the South Beach diet. The Zone diet has its rudimentary beginnings in the writings of the Stillman concepts, although it is far removed from the shortsighted and faddish thoughts Dr. Stillman suggested.
Unfortunately, as the celebs rediscover Dr. Stillman, the limitations of the diet plan become painfully obvious: any and all carbohydrates are forbidden and unlike the Atkins plan, the use of any kind of condiment is forbidden. While this might be okay for the first day or two, thereafter it becomes a rather trying diet. It is not advisable to follow this diet even though it is known to work. The biggest problems associated with the Stillman diet are of course the damage it can do to the kidneys.
Even Dr. Atkins’ plan has been implicated in the advancement of kidney disease and in some cases might even be the causation, but the Stillman diet is even harder on these vital organs. Dr. Stillman sought to counteract this effect by admonishing dieters to continually flush out their kidneys by imbibing about 80 ounces of water on a daily basis. Even as celebrities are known to do anything and everything in the pursuit of weight loss, this regimen is over the top and has the potential to result in long lasting and potentially even fatal consequences.
The foregoing notwithstanding, it is the fact that the diet works that makes it so insidious. It is fast, the fat melts away, and the celebrities appreciate the way that this kind of diet is even more effective than Atkins and South Beach combined. The part that nobody really talks about is the idea that once a normal eating pattern is once again followed, the weight most likely will be coming back with a vengeance. This has caused dieticians to counsel their patients to opt for a fully supported diet program with a maintenance option instead.
As such, the Weight Watchers and also Jenny Craig plans are considered to be the premier weight loss vehicles for those who need to lose some pounds but want to do so in a supportive environment that is certain to help the individual not only through the initial weight loss phase but later on also assist with keeping the person healthy. Celebs rediscover Dr. Stillman, but you will be well advised to stay away from his diet as much as possible.
